'Lords of Dogtown' - Movie Review

March 31st 2008 04:55

Based on the true story of skateboarding and surfing trends in Venice, California in the 1970’s. Based around the Z-Boys, a group of skateboarders that revolutionized the sport making it what it is today. The film focuses on the rise and fall of the Zephyr team (Z-Boys) led by Skip Engblom comprising of Tony Alva, Stacey Peralta and Jay Adams.

Directed by ‘Thirteen’s’ Catherine Hardwicke and starring Emile Hirsch, Heath Ledger, Victor Rasuk, John Robinson, Nikki Reed, Michael Angarano, Johnny Knoxville and Rebecca De Mornay.
Stacey Peralta’s documentary ‘Dogtown and Z-Boys’ serves as a launch pad for ‘Lords of Dogtown’. Peralta was in fact the writer of both the documentary and the feature film, so what is delivered is not ‘popcorn fodder’ but a true factual representation of the skating movement in the 70s.

The acting was top notch, the three main characters Tony Alva, Stacey Peralta and Jay Adams were portrayed wonderfully by Victor Rasuk, John Robinson and Emile Hirsch realistically capturing the essence and personalities of their characters. Standout performances by Emile Hirsch as troubled and unpredictable Adams and Heath Ledger as Zephyr store owner and team leader ‘Engblom’.

The cinematography and severe, sandy coloured tones gives the film the right effect of grittiness and realism for the setting. The camera work is fantastic really bringing you into the drama, and making you feel that you were in the skateboarding action, particularly in the ‘dog bowl’ scenes.

As well as a kick ass soundtrack by the likes of Ted Nugent, David Bowie, Neil Young, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Social Distortion, Deep Purple and Iggy Pop.

For fans of skateboarding and those that are not. A particularly enjoyable movie!

Directed by Goran Dukic and based on the short story ‘Knellers Happy Campers’ by Etgar Keret. Starring Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous), Shannyn Sossamon (A Knights Tale), Tom Waits, Leslie Bibb (Popular), Will Arnett (Arrested Development), Azura Skye and Sarah Roemer.

Set in a bizarre afterlife full of people that have committed suicide. After the main protagonist Zia commits suicide by slitting his wrists. He finds himself in an afterlife midpoint, equally as bleak as his former life. He meets Eugene a former Russian rocker and his entire family, all suicide victims. He later learns that his ex-girlfriend committed suicide after his death. Zia and Eugene then embark on a road trip to find his ex Desiree.
Along the way they pickup Mikal, who insists that she is there by accident, the three continue travelling along meeting various strange and offbeat characters.

Cited as a black comedy/drama/fantasy I didn’t quite get the comedy. The actors were all great; except for Shannyn Sossamon I don’t find her engaging or remotely talented at all, which may seem a bit harsh.

Now I am a big fan of indie flicks, I like quirky movies, but I really did not enjoy ‘Wristcutters’, I was constantly pausing it, looking for snacks, basically I was bored to tears. There were a few moments that were touching, that made you think, but in the end I didn’t really care, I was just waiting for it to finish.

Original and creative, but not my cup of tea.

I am a huge animal lover; the following list is a collection of my favourite movie/TV animals live, cartoon or CGI.

* Dory – Finding Nemo
Everybody’s favourite Regal Tang. Ellen DeGeneres is marvellous as Dory, a fish suffering from short term memory loss, who helps Marlin find his lost son Nemo before it’s too late. Dory produces some fabulous one liners;
‘He’s lost his son, Fabio’
‘I wish I could speak whale!’
‘E-S-C-A-P-E, its funny it’s spelt just like the word escape’

* Paul Anka – Gilmore Girls
Lorelai Gilmore’s love for the ‘real’ Paul Anka was the motivation for this Polish Lowland Sheepdog’s quirky name. Paul Anka has a penchant for all things weird, he has a habit of getting into locked cars, locking himself in cars, he is scared of shadows and his front porch steps.

* Andre - Andre
The true story of a seal that a befriended a little girl and her family in the 1960’s. Actually a Sea Lion in the movie, after I saw this movie at 8 years old my next pet was going to be a seal.

* Inspector Rex – Inspector Rex
Obviously I’m very biased because I have a German Shepherd, I just love the breed, although mine isn’t as smart as Rex. Rex functions as a Cadaver dog, sniffer dog and as another set of eyes for his team. Basically when watching Inspector Rex, I care more about Rex than his human counterparts.

* Jinxie – Meet the Parents
Robert De Nero’s highly trained/ gifted Himalayan cat. Has the ability of flushing a toilet despite not having opposable thumbs.

* Babe - Babe
The runt of the litter, he is picked and brought to a farmhouse where he is raised by a sheepdog. He has his heart set on becoming a sheep dog himself.

* Lady and the Tramp – Lady and the Tramp
Lady an adorable Cocker Spaniel and Tramp a mutt modelled on a schnauzer, the pair meet, share a dangerous adventure and eventually fall in love. Who can forget the infamous spaghetti scene.

* Willy – Free Willy
The popular movie about a boy befriending an Orca Whale. To save the life of Willy, Jesse devises a plan to release Willy back into the wild. Where in the triumphant scene Willy jumps over the rocks, over his friend to freedom.

Who are your favourite Animals on the big or small screen??

I thought I'd write a bit of poetry. I've never published poetry before. I only ever wrote it for my husband. I was going through a few of my old things tonight, as I always do around the anniversary of his death, and found a few poems I wrote for him.

High Horses and Low Horses

I think the medication has finally kicked in. So it should. I took a whole packet of anti-depressants this morning. And just sat around waiting for them to work. got to the stage where I had to wash my thyroid tablets down with brandy.

Doctors are strange. They say things like, "You shouldn't drink or smoke." inter alia et al & etc. Well, perhaps we shouldn't breathe because it's dangerous for our health? Doctors? I tell you. They sit there and charge $50 for a five minute visit. If I was getting paid $50 every five minutes to tell people how to look after their health, I wouldn't have any health problems

I'm lying prostrate on the floor as I type this, because it's my way of saying sorry I haven't posted for a while. If I make a few typos? You'll have to excuse me. I can't see the keyboard from this submissive female position.

I'm even struggling to keep my petticoat afloat

Best Music Moments on film

March 17th 2008 06:20
The soundtrack to a motion picture can be pivotal to the movies success. I know personally I have come home after seeing a movie and searched for the music on the net.
The perfect music to accompany a movie/scene can leave you with chills, make you cry and leave you with a smile on your face.

TV's Not All Bad

March 12th 2008 04:30
For years we have heard the constant prattle screamed at us from our parents, ‘Turn that stupid thing off’, ‘Don’t you have anything better to do with your time?’ But if our parents actually knew what we were watching would they still act the same way? They may even join us occasionally on the couch.

We all have our own guilty little pleasures, for our older sister it may have been Beverly Hills 90210. For our mothers, Melrose Place. And for our generation there was the OC and the new teen hit Gossip Girls

'Meet the Spartans' - Film Review

March 10th 2008 00:31

Meet the Spartans takes the cake as the worst movie I have ever laid eyes on. The latest spoof/parody produced and directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer runs at a measly 75 minutes, which if you ask me was still way to long
