Two Favourite Songs of the Week!

May 29th 2008 05:00
This week I've chosen my very favourite Beach Boys song and a great song by Fleetwood Mac.

* Dont Worry Baby - The Beach Boys, off the album Shut Down Volume 2

I am in love with this song, so much so that its virtually the only thing ive listened to for the last week.
The basic plot behind the song is about a teenager who agrees to a challenge to race a rival in order to defend his honor after bragging about his car, and his girlfriend's plea to take her love with him when he races.

I would go as far as saying this is one of my favourite songs from the 1960's.

* Best Part - The whole song, Brian Wilson's voice, the simple guitar chords its a gorgeous song.

* Big Love (Live) - Fleetwood Mac, the original is off the album Tango In the Night.

This song is amazing, Lindsey Buckingham rips it up performing this song live. I much prefer Lindsey Buckingham performing this song solo to the Fleetwood Mac version.

* Best Part - I used to only listen to the first minute, but recently only started listening to the whole song, 1.35 onwards shows what a great voice Buckingham has.

Im am now onto my ‘American Dreams’ marathon after purchasing some bootlegged copies, but 2 weeks ago I was just coming out of Sunnydale after a Buffy marathon month.
I fell in love with Buffy when I was staying at my Aunts house in 1998, sleeping on the couch watching Foxtel one night; I changed the channel to fox 8 and since then I’ve been a Buffy fanatic/ aficionado. Scooping every DVD box set lemming like, paying far more than I could afford as a young teen. Then having to replace them as I scratched them, sad I know.

Im not going to get into the specifics as to why I love the show so much, other fans will know exactly why its practically one of the best shows created, but im still trying to turn other friends onto it.
How can a show studied by scholars be ludicrous and stupid, quite simply its not!!

I thought I would have to do seven posts, for my favourite 3 or 4 episodes a season, seven seasons in total.

In no particular order:

SEASON 1

1. Welcome to the Hellmouth (1)
I very well could not create a list of my fav episodes and not include the pilot to the series, Buffy was unlike anything else when it started, primarily because of the female heroin. The very first sequence in the pilot shows what looks like a scared, defenceless blonde sneaking into the high school with some guy, after hearing a noise, both look around, only then to turn to each other and the blonde (Darla) reveals her ‘vamp’ face.
The episode focuses on Buffy Summers and her move from LA to Sunnydale after her expulsion from her former high school, as well as the introduction of the other cast members who as yet do not know of Buffy’s ‘powers’. As well as the introduction to the smoking hot Angel (yes my poster boy growing up), The Master Buffy’s nemesis for the season and Darla, who is killed in Angel, but re-appears in season 2 of Angel.
The next episode Buffy reveals to her new friends Willow and Xander that she fights the forces of evil.

2. The Witch (3)

This episode makes me laugh every time I see it, the Buffy ‘drunk’ scenes where she’s cheerleading, and Xander giving her the bracelet, then telling him that she loves him, only to reveal she loves him because he’s completely one of the girls (the sly smile by Willow its great).
This episode deals with a mother trying to go back to her glory days as head cheerleader, switching bodies with her daughter Amy (a character that later reappears now and again right up to season 7, and im going off on a short tangent now. Joss Whedon uses this episode specifically with the character Amy to foreshadow the magic use she will be abusing in coming seasons). The mother then casts spells on the cheerleaders in her way and eventually hexes Buffy.

3. Prophecy Girl (12)

The season finale, a taste for the finales we would have to look forward to in future years. The episode is the final confrontation with the Master, as well as Buffy dealing with the burden of slayerhood, and ultimately letting it consume her to an extent, knowing that its what she was chosen to do, and even allowing her self to die to fulfil those wishes (she was revived by Xander) as well as activating a second slayer Kendra.

Well I could talk your ear off about Buffy, next we have season 2……..

I compiled a list of 10 of my favourite songs and or albums in various movies, Best Music Moments on Film (Part 1) which was quite a struggle, as I was overflowing with other favourite songs but did not want to bore my fellow bloggers.

But I could not contain myself any longer, so here is part 2 of my favourite or best music moments on film.

1. Running With Scissors – starring Annette Bening, Brian Cox, Evan Rachel Wood, Joseph Cross, Alec Baldwin and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Highly underrated and hilarious.

The Song(s) – ‘Bennie and the Jets’ by Elton John, ‘Blinded by the Light’ by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and my absolute favourite song in the whole film ‘Year of the Cat’ by Al Stewart used in my favourite moment in the movie

*Heavily edited

2. The Hitcher – starring Sophia Bush, Sean Bean and Zachary Knighton.

The Song(s) – ‘How We Operate’ by Gomez and the ultimately cool ‘Closer’ by Nine Inch Nails, crappy remake but the highway chase scene made up for it.

3. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer – starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr, Brandy and Mekhi Phifer.

The Song – Lamb’s hauntingly beautiful ‘Gorecki’.

4. Disturbing Behaviour – starring James Marsden, Katie Holmes (before robotation/ marriage to cruise), Nick Stahl and Bruce Greenwood.

The Song – ‘Flagpole Sitta’ by Harvey Danger (2.26 – 3.15). Yep the best moment in the whole movie, minus every other scene James Marsden is onscreen.

5. Lords of Dogtown – starring Emile Hirsch, Heath Ledger, Victor Rasuk, John Robinson and Nikki Reed.

The Soundtrack – A rockin soundtrack by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Teg Nugent, David Bowie, Black Sabbath, Social Distortion, Deep Purple, Iggy Pop and a particularly poignant scene with Heath Ledger, singing along to Rod Stewarts ‘Maggie May.

6. Breakfast At Tiffany’s – starring Audrey Hepburn, George Pappard and Mickey Rooney.

The Song – Audrey Hepburn singing ‘Moon River’, simple but utterly divine!!

7. Wayne’s World – Starring Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey, Rob Lowe, Tia Carrere and Larra Flynn Boyle.

The Song(s) – Who can forget Garth’s hilarious serenading of the ‘blonde hot girl’ at the diner to ‘Foxey Lady by Jimi Hendrix and the head bashing to Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

8. Southland Tales – starring Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sean William Scott, Justin Timberlake, Mandy Moore and many more!!

The Soundtrack – A gorgeous track by Muse ‘Blackout’, ‘All These Things That I’ve Done’ by The Killers, ‘Wave of Mutilation’ by The Pixies, even Rebekah Del Rio’s version of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ unlike anything I have heard. Ultimately Moby’s ‘Memory Gospel’ is my favourite track in the whole film.

9. Garden State – starring Zach Braff and Natalie Portman.

The Soundtrack – The Shins = Amazing, favourite tracks include: ‘Caring Is Creepy’ and ‘New Slang’ and ‘Let Go’ by Frou Frou.

10. Top Gun – starring Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, and Meg Ryan.

You know any old school movies with Tom cruise AND Val Kilmer with their shirts off, I’m there!!!

The Soundtrack – ‘Danger Zone’ by Kenny Loggins, ‘Take My Breath Away’ by Berlin and ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’ by The Righteous Brothers.

11. The Wedding Singer – starring Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore and Christine Taylor.

The Soundtrack – I don’t know who didn’t fall in love with Adam Sandler when he sang ‘Grow Old with You’. Filled with great 80’s tracks such as ’99 Luftballons’ by Nena, ‘White Wedding by Billy Idol, ‘Pass the Dutchie’ by Musical Youth, ‘All Night Long’ by Lionel Ritchie and many many more!

12. Dick – starring Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, Dan Hedaya, Will Ferrell, Ana Gaysteyer and Ryan Reynolds.

The Soundtrack – ‘ABC’ by Jackson 5, ‘Rock your Baby’ by George McCrae, ‘Lady Marmalade’ by Labelle, ‘Crocodile Rock’ by Elton John, ‘You’re So Vain’ by Carly Simon and ‘Dancing Queen’ by ABBA. All the great oldies we love to sing along to.

My first reaction would be to curl up in a ball and shamelessly curse technology for breaking my heart.

Yes as you can tell there was a very big loss in my family yesterday when my trusty Teac DVD player died with my ‘American Dreams’ DVD inside. We then spent the rest of the afternoon rushing around for a multi-region, 5.1 surround sound DVD player with no luck

I was feeling very nostalgic and wanted a good ol DVD to curl up with. I picked one of my old faves Edward Scissorhands. There are about four movies that I distinctively remember watching when I was a child and they are Grease, Dirty Dancing, Edward Scissorhands and Labyrinth, so naturally I like to stick with what I know

It’s taken a little longer than expected but I have finally gotten around to reviewing Southland Tales, the second film by Donnie Darko writer and director Richard Kelly. The film stars: Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Seann William Scott, Justin Timberlake, Mandy Moore, Miranda Richardson, Holmes Osborne, Kevin Smith, Cheri Oteri and many more
