Mutton dressing up Lamb

September 18th 2008 23:05

She blew into town on the back of a heatwave
the same December day, a hot northerly invaded nearly every street
and covered so many houses in foreign dirt

She certainly left her mark

Dusty footprints, running naked through back yards
a bundle of clothes wrapped up in her arms
like the child she would never have

like the children asleep in the various rooms
as mummy's headlights splashed the front of the house
and daddy slipped his trousers on

Husbands forget their wives
how much their ovens have slaved
and over sunday roast
speak of how lamb is younger than mutton
how it looks and tastes better, too

Wool is not on their minds

Bushfires threaten country towns
but loose women do much more damage

Fierce People - Movie Review

September 17th 2008 09:28

Starring:
Diane Lane = Liz Earl
Anton Yelchin = Finn Earl
Donald Sutherland = Ogden C. Osborne
Kristen Stewart = Maya
Chris Evans = Bryce
Elizabeth Perkins = Mrs Langley

Synopsis
When 16-year-old Finn is caught buying cocaine for his junkie but well intentioned mother Liz, his plans of spending the summer away from NYC with his anthropologist father studying the Ishkanani in the jungle are abruptly changed. In an attempt to get both of their lives back on track, Liz moves the two of them out to a cottage on the country estate of her sugar daddy, Mr. Osborne. Finn immediately makes his way into the 'tribe' of wealthy country clubbers that inhabit his new home. Soon Finn is dating Mr. Osborne's granddaughter Maya and has found a best friend in her brother Bryce. Finn adjusts quickly to their life of fancy clothes, cars, horses, sex and drugs. Liz begins attending AA meetings and begins to establish herself as a loving mother working to correct her mistakes and win back Finn's love and trust. Unfortunately things begin to spiral out of control, and he begins to see that the wealth and friendships bestowed upon him come at a price.

Based on a novel written by Dirk Wittenborn, this hilarious quirky film is quite entertaining. With a superb cast, standouts include Anton Yelchin the main protagonist, Kristen Stewart as the rich “girlfriend” and Donald Sutherland as the eccentric millionaire. The main reason I checked the film out in the first place was Stewart, I happen to think she is one of the best if not the best teen actress out there at the moment.

The film received quite a few scathing reviews and was not released till the end of November 07, despite being filmed in 2005. Though that doesn’t diminish the film in my eyes, it was an enjoyable film for those that like something a little different.

It’s not an action movie so if you wanna see some shooting and some boobs you will be disappointed.

3/5
