Best Onscreen Couples!
Sometimes you get the duds. Sometimes, you get a couple so great, a movie skyrockets to success.
Below is a short list of my favourite onscreen couples.
* Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe - Cruel Intentions
Not actually a romantic couple ‘Per se’, more like step brother and sister. I just loved them both so much in the movie and in their respective roles. Gellar plays the manipulative ‘Kathryn’ and Phillippe plays womaniser ‘Sebastian’.
* Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling – The Notebook
I am definitely on the side of the movie being better than the book in this case. Not the typical lousy romantic film, a moving beautiful representation of finding and fighting to keep your soul mate.
* John Travolta and Olivia Newton John – Grease
The fantabulous movie musical spawned one of the greatest fictional couples of all time. Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson were the epitome of high school love, though they did look a bit ripe for teenagehood.
* Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder – Edward Scissorhands
Can Johnny Depp ever look bad? Apparently not! As the Frankensteinish Edward with scissors for hands, he falls in love with Kim (Winona Ryder). The poignant scene where Kim dances in the falling snow, as Edward carves the snow angel was beautiful.
* Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey – Dirty Dancing
Well dur, I couldn’t create a best screen couple list without Johnny Castle and Baby. Patrick Swayze was definitely the quintessence of boy or man crushes, even though I was only 8ish when I first saw the movie in the mid nineties. Dirtsy Dancing as I used to call it, is still one of my favourite movies to this day. And who didn’t love their final dance in the finale.
* Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet – Titanic
* Leonardo Di Caprio and Claire Danes – Romeo and Juliet
The classic tale of two star crossed lovers and a film about one of the worst maritime disasters in history. I have a hard time finding anybody that didn’t fall in love with Leo in the Capulet party/ elevator scene in Romeo and Juliet. Both Leonardo and Claire brought alive two of the most favourite literary characters of all time, in my personal favourite version of Romeo and Juliet.
* Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo – Suddenly 30
* Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet – Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
* Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck – Roman Holiday
* Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford – The Way We Were
