'Black Christmas' 2006 - Movie Review
April 9th 2008 05:25
Why they commit crap like this to film is a complete mystery to me.
Based on the 1974 film of the same name, loosely based on a string of murders that occurred in Montreal around Christmas time. The original film starred Olivia Hussey, Margot Kidder, Andrea Martin and John Saxon and was directed by Bob Clark.
The latest film released in the US in December 2006 (unsure about Aust release dates) stars: Katie Cassidy (daughter of 70’s pop icon David Cassidy, also stars in Supernatural), Michelle Trachtenberg (BTVS), Lacey Chabert (Party of Five, Mean Girls), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Bobby, Die Hard 4.0), Andrea Martin (Original Black Christmas) and Oliver Hudson (Rules of Engagement) and directed by Glen Morgan.
I still have no idea why this movie was remade in the first place, the original ‘Black Christmas’ actually fits into the horror genre, and is somewhat of a cult classic among horror/slasher buffs, rather than the pretentious shambolic mess that is the 2006 remake.
There is virtually no character development, although the film does delve into the killers (Billy) past, I only caught a few of the actresses names in the movie, and I couldn’t possible endure a second viewing to find out if I was right or short of hearing.
The supposed murder scenes were laughable at best (eyeball anyone??). Quite plainly this is a pointless slasher flick with nothing promising to offer, asides from the incredibly ridiculously good looking cast. The movie has a 17% score on rotten tomatoes, which is sheer amazement to me.
1 ½ /5 for the 2006 version
3 ½ /5 for the original 1974 Black Christmas
