Buffy is ………………………………… Bi-Sexual?
Your thinking and the big deal is?
There has been somewhat of a backlash of the cult heroin, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, due to the recent release of a Season 8 comic entitled ‘Wolves at the Gate pt 1’. The recent issue has Buffy regulars, Willow, Xander and Dawn walk in on buffy and a fellow female slayer naked in bed (flagrante).
Then people got on their computers! They were not happy. Some people on internet sites went as far as to say they had lost a role model, others have simply accused series creator Joss Whedon of money grabbing, evilly selling out their much loved heroin to move more copies of the season 8 comics.
This seemingly trivial issue has even voted a mention in the New York Times and ABC News, so why has a little comic caused so much fuss and who really cares who the fictional character, Buffy sleeps with?
Buffy over the seven year period on air, had 3 serious, semi long term relationships, 1 one-night stand and a trivial rebound relationship after Angel, they were all with men. There didn’t seem too much of an outrage when Buffy slept with womaniser and all around jerk, Parker. People seemed to forgive Buffy for that momentary lapse in Judgement, why are people now so quick to taint her rather fictional reputation for doing the same thing with a woman.
While yes, it is rather unusual to introduce a major storyline in the form of a same sex relationship in regards to the shows main protagonist in the 8th season of a very successful show, with a massive cult following. It is not the first time the show has dealt with same sex relationships, Willow another main character had been in a loving relationship with a woman over 3 seasons. This garnered much praise from critics and fans alike. Among fans, Willow’s relationship with Tara had been their favourite in the history of the buffyverse. So why are on earth are people objecting to Buffy’s seemingly harmful tryst with another woman.
Whedon is adamant that this latest turn in events was not a ruse to sell out his beloved heroin, but simply as character development.
Comic guru Matthew McAllister, ascertains "That it wasn’t like Buffy hadn't explored these issues before, so in a way it went with the basic sensibility of the characters and the universe of Buffy," 'Buffy' is a metaphor for teenage life, and one of the issues teenagers face is the questioning of sexuality.
Is that any comfort to the thousands of fans who were deeply outraged at Buffy’s latest season 8 antics.
To fully understand Buffy’s state of mind, you simply had to read earlier issues in the comic series. It was quite obvious that Buffy was lonely and in need of some sort of companionship (She dreamed of a threesome with vampire lovers Spike and Angel).
At the end of the day what difference does it make if Buffy slept with a woman or a man. In no way have Joss Whedon or writers expressed that Buffy was now a lesbian, in fact they have stated quite the opposite.
Fans should be relishing the fact they have a creator and a team of writers devoted to the Buffy franchise. To continue creating stories and characters that you fall in love with, that you never tire of. Allowing viewers and readers to completely immerse themselves in another world.
No doubt fans will be eagerly awaiting the release of the next issue on April 2nd; at least it rates for some interesting reading.

I know it's the PC thing to be all 'nothing wrong with gays' but this is nothing short of character sellout in the name of sex appeal.

This is something they could never have done in the television series because it would have compromised Buffy's character too much and just have seemed like a ploy. The whole Buffy/Spike thing worked becasue there was a history and the character development was more for Spike than Buffy. We were used to seeing Buffy romantically involved with vampires (Angel) but Spike was the one going through changes. To have Buffy play with her orientation wouldn't have made sense and I think the only reason it works in the comic is because the comic is more like a parody of the show and is treated more experimentally. Whatever the case, I'm just glad they're adding new constellations to the Buffyverse.
Good Post.
