Havoc - Movie Review
April 23rd 2008 04:01
Havoc tells the story of wealthy white American teenagers whose exposure to the rap/hip-hop culture leads them to imitate the ‘gangster’ lifestyle. Havoc was released straight to DVD on November 29, 2005.
The film stars Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada), Bijou Phillips (Bully), Freddy Rodriguez (Bobby), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), Shiri Appleby (Roswell) and directed by Barbara Kopple.
Barbara Kopple’s direction was brilliant in the film; the way Havoc is filmed is almost in a documentary style, which wonderfully captures the gritty, realistic street thug world.
I however find many things highly ludicrous, Anne Hathaway was definitely miscast, while she did pull in a reasonable performance I did not believe for a second that she was a street thug (wigga). There is one particular scene where she and Bijou Phillips were rapping and I was so embarrassed for them I had to skip the DVD along.
The white wigga’s as they are called are called, I felt were extremely over acted, I myself have never met anybody with such a heightened/ fake take on the hip hop world. They never once came across as dangerous thugs, more like children finding new ways to piss off their parents.
Hathaway was desperately trying to pull away from her good girl Disney image and she certainly did it in this film, with several nudie scenes, but it really didn’t do much for her.
The film was a bit of a disappointment, and some wise advice, don’t watch it with your parents.
2/5
And if you feel like having some fun whilst watching the movie, play the Havoc drinking game!
