Cinema Voyage - Michael Pearson

This blog is PRIMARILY about movies. Some dvd and some that are still in the theater. Also, links are provided on some movies if you decide you want to purchase it. Also, I write and read quite a bit. So, you may, from time to time see a book review here from an up-and-coming author or an interview with one. If you have a book that you have written, please don't hesitate to contact me if you want an unbiased opinion. I would be happy to read and review what you've written. We should value our creative people more.

Mamma Mia – Movie Review

July 24th 2008 10:47

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia: The Musical)
Starring Meryl Streep (Death Becomes Her, the Devil Wears Prada) Amanda Seyfried (Veronica Mars, Mean Girls) Pierce Brosnan (James Bond) Colin Firth (Love Actually, Bridget Jones) Stellan Skarsgard (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Goya’s Ghost) Julie Walters (Harry Potter, Billy Elliot) Christine Baranski (Cruel Intentions).

Bride to be Sophie (Seyfried) is searching for her father with three possible men being plausible, Bill (Skarsgard), Sam (Brosnan) and Harry (Firth). All receive an invitation to her upcoming nuptials so she can learn who her real father is. Unbeknownst to Sophie’s mother Donna (Streep) owner of her small Greek island hotel ‘Villa Donna’. With ABBA’S toe tapping hits serving as a tapestry to interweave the plots and characters.

I was expecting to enjoy Mamma Mia, but not as much as I did…………… I loved it.

What wasn’t to love, the beautiful Greek island backdrops of Skopelos and Skiathos added a whole other dimension to the film. The casting agent should be commended, the cast was amazing, with only one gripe that being Mr Brosnan, who was quite terrible. Amanda Seyfried was absolutely AMAZING, ive seen her in other roles were she usually pulls in a good performance, but not like in Mamma Mia she was magical. Julie Walters was hilarious as Donna’s friend ‘Rosie’, who couldn’t get the image of Walters singing ‘Take a chance on me’ to Skellan Skarsgard, chasing him across the rooftops.

ABBA’S smash hits were fantastically performed by the cast, again who knew how wonderful Seyfried’s voice was. I only hope she doesn’t go down the whole actress/singer path, which would ruin everything.

All in all, a highly entertaining movie.

4/5
