Cinema Voyage - Michael Pearson

This blog is PRIMARILY about movies. Some dvd and some that are still in the theater. Also, links are provided on some movies if you decide you want to purchase it. Also, I write and read quite a bit. So, you may, from time to time see a book review here from an up-and-coming author or an interview with one. If you have a book that you have written, please don't hesitate to contact me if you want an unbiased opinion. I would be happy to read and review what you've written. We should value our creative people more.

Is Anybody There?

May 22nd 2009 03:32
Starring film veteran Michael Caine (The Dark Knight, Sleuth) and Bill Milner (Son of Rambow), Is Anybody There? is set in a seaside English town in the late 80s. It charts the unlikely friendship that develops between Clarence (Caine), a veteran performer and the afterlife-obsessed young son (Milner) of a nursing home's overwhelmed owners (Anne-Marie Duff and David Morrissey).

Directed by Irish theatre director John Crowley (A Boy, Intermission), this charming film was written and based on the true to life experiences of Peter Harness as he grew up in a nursing home.

In response to his preparation for the role, Michael Caine commented in an Orange interview that he starting parting his hair in the middle, reminiscent of Houdini's hair style.

The movie opens in Australia on June 4.

(500) Days Of Summer

May 17th 2009 11:01
Zooey Deschanel's (Yes Man, The Happening) name seems to be synonamous with quirky movies and the September release of (500) Days Of Summer proves to be no different. Starring Zooey as Summer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Killshot, Stoploss) as Tom, the movie follows a year and a half period upon which the two main leads get to know one another.

Summer does not believe true love exists although Tom has a different take on this as he falls heavily for his colleague on her first day of work. The film jumps back and forth during this set 500 day period giving you glimpses of their relationship in the future and seems to be more creative than the usual boy meets girl story.

Directed by music video director Marc Webb, this movie was well received at the Sundance Festival.

Brothers Bloom

May 15th 2009 02:33
Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo are an interesting mix for a crime comedy and for this reason, Brothers Bloom looks like it will be a lot of fun.

The world's greatest con men, the Brothers Bloom, have made a living from swindling millionaires with complex scenarios. Stephen (Ruffalo) and Bloom (Brody), and their sidekick Bang-Bang (Rinko Kikuchi) team up for one last job, conning an eccentric heiress (Weisz) by taking her on a tour of the world and relieving her of $2.5 million. Complications arise for Bloom and the team when he finds himeself falling for the beautiful heiress.

Directed by relative newcomer to the movie scene Rian Johnson, it is great to see that his screenplay has attracted some big names for the film. His previous film, the independent teen film Brick (2005) was shot in 19 days for just under $500,000. So I would hasten to guess that his budget for his follow up film is slightly more than his original full length feature.

The Limits of Control

April 15th 2009 03:02
The Limits of Control is a drama written and directed by Jim Jarmusch starring Bill Murray, John Hurt, Gael García Bernal, Isaach De Bankole and Tilda Swinton. This will be the third time Bill and Jim have worked together, previously on Broken Flowers (also with Tilda Swinton - 2005) and Coffee and Cigarettes (2003). This also marks the fourth time that Isaach and Jim have worked together - previously Night on Earth (1991), Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) and Coffee and Cigarettes.

I have been a fan of Jim's work since Mystery Train (1989) and Night on Earth - movies which tell the tales of individuals all being connected by a universal theme or situation

Scheduled for limited release in July is Sam Mendes' drama/comedy Away We Go. Written by Vendela Vida and Dave Eggers, Away We Go stars John Krasinki (The Office - US Version) and Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live) as expectant parents. Unsure where to settle down and raise their family, they set about travelling around the US in order to find the perfect place.

Hilary Swank As Amelia Earhart

March 11th 2009 15:34
Set for an October release, Amelia stars Hilary Swank, Ewan McGregor, Richard Gere and Virginia Madsen. Directed by Moonsoon Wedding's Mira Noir and written by Ronald Bass (Entrapment, Snow Falling On Cedars), this movie will focus on the earlier stages of her career rather than her mysterious disappearance.

Hilary Swank plays the renowned pilot Amelia Earhart who, attempting to fly solo around the world, disappeared over the Pacific Ocean in 1937

Craven's The Last House On The Left

February 25th 2009 11:36
1972 was a good year for horror fans as it was the year Wes Craven came to be known for his first flick - the gruesome The Last House On The Left.

Due for release next month is the remake of the film although he has handed over the directing reigns to a lesser known Dennis Iliadis.

Academy Awards 2009

February 20th 2009 10:49
22 February 2009 is the date set for the Oscars and no doubt controversy will follow in it's wake. Hugh Jackman is set to host the evening and as always, spectators will be following the fashion, as well as the results of the night.

Benjamin Button is up for an amazing 13 nominations and although it was one of my favourite films in 2008 I am sure that it will only take home a handful of those.

Oscar Season

February 8th 2009 08:29
In the run up to the Oscar ceremony I always try and cram in as many Oscar nominated movies as possible. But over the years I have learnt that watching the movies does not bring you any closer to guessing who is going to win. In fact in the annual Oscar competition in my family, I am yet to actually win even though I am usually the one who knows the most about the films and the actors. Maybe I put more thought into the task although in truth, I think I usually try to nominate who I want to win as opposed to who I think will win, which is often to my detriment. And it seems, each year I never learn!

Noting this year's list, I am still a few movies behind and with only a fortnight to go, looks like I will be kept fairly busy

The International

January 29th 2009 05:34
There seems to be a spate of movies opening in the coming months which I am very interested in watching. As a Clive Owen and Naomi Watts fan I am very keen to see The International.

Clive Owen stars as Louis Salinger, an Interpol agent, who alongside with Naomi Watts as Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman, attempt to bring one of the world's largest banks to justice.
