Cinema Voyage - Michael Pearson

This blog is PRIMARILY about movies. Some dvd and some that are still in the theater. Also, links are provided on some movies if you decide you want to purchase it. Also, I write and read quite a bit. So, you may, from time to time see a book review here from an up-and-coming author or an interview with one. If you have a book that you have written, please don't hesitate to contact me if you want an unbiased opinion. I would be happy to read and review what you've written. We should value our creative people more.

My Sister's Keeper

June 29th 2009 11:11
My Sister's Keeper, based on the popular novel by Jodi Picoult, will no doubt be a success at the box office despite the opinion of the reviewers. Starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Patric, the movie touches on a sensitive subject about a young girl who sues her parents for the right to make her own decisions about how her body is used particularly in light of a planned kidney transplant to save her older sister's life. The sisters are played by Abigail Breslin and Sofia Vassilieva.

Director Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook), when asked about the alternative ending that featured in the movie replied "I think the book is awesome and I think the movie is awesome and I think that because they’re different, it actually adds to the value of both. I didn’t change the book’s ending. We changed the movie’s ending and the reason why we did it is I think it’s a superior ending for the movie". Movie-goers who are sticklers for the storyline to remain the same may not be as keen and many reviews are calling the movie manipulative and contrived.

What's your opinion?

Hopefully this turns out OK Michelle but I don't have much faith in Cassevetes whose past work has been mostly underwhelming. Not that it's got anything to do with how the film turns out but I have to admit I can't stand Jodi Picoult either, I think it's one of the great mysteries of the universe how she's become such a successful writer, her grasp of reality is a very tenuous one.

I don't read much fiction, but I loved this novel. And I don't think I have ever read a Jodi Picoult book that I didn't like. However, I don't think I am going to like the movie as much as the book. I'm not even particularly keen to see it. Plus, I hate movies where they completely change the ending to the book. It really annoys me.

David - popular fiction is sometimes a mystery to me although I must admit I have read this one although it didn't particularly grab me at the time.

Samaritan - sounds like you are best to steer clear of this one particularly in light of how much you enjoyed the book.
