Movers, Pushers, Watchers, Bleeders, Sniffs, Shifters, Wipers, Shadows and Stitchers. What do you want to be when you grow up?
Just to give you the lowdown and to avoid any possible confusion of which there may be much: Movers can manipulate objects; Pushers put thoughts, feelings and memories into the heads of others; Watchers can foresee the future; Bleeders emit high frequency sonic vibrations that can rupture blood vessels; Sniffs are like bloodhounds using their nose to locate people or objects; Shifters can temporarily shift patterns of light on any object to create illusions; Wipers erase your memory either on a permanent or temporary basis; Shadows can block visions of others; and Stitchers can heal or unheal by reconstructing cells on touch.
Now to set the scene as narrated by Cassie Holmes (Dakota Fanning). a second generation Watcher. She tells us that in 1945, Hitler and his Nazis were using experiments on people who were born with special abilities to create an ultra-powerful army. Once the war ended, the experiments continued and then spread to other countries who then set up their own branches or divisions as they are also known.
Cassie's mother, the greatest watcher seen so far, is held prisoner by one such Division and Cassie, at the tender age of 13 is running around fulfilling the prophecy her mother foretold. She along with the help of Mover Nick Gant (Chris Evans) are looking for an unknown girl and a mystery serum which will supposedly help bring down the Divison and save the world. If it sounds a little like the television series Heroes - then you are correct in your assumptions.
As it turns out the mystery girl is Nick's ex-girlfriend Kira Hudson (Camilla Belle), a Pusher, who is also on the run from the Division, in particular that of head honcho Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou). Injected with a serum to increase her ability, she, as it turns out, is the only individual who did not die from the injection. But being on the run holds risks for her as the injection also infected her and she needs a treatment from Division in order to stay alive.
Not only are the threesome trying to avoid capture from Division but also the local Hong Kong style mafia consisting of a girl who continuously sucks lollipops (a Watcher) and her father and brothers (Bleeders).
The acting in the movie is passable at best except for Dakota Fanning who seems to steal every scene she is in particularly when she enters the motel room drunk. The script and dialogue is dire in parts although once the group eventually come up with a plan to locate the briefcase, it does manage to get slightly more interesting. I am not exactly sure what Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin) was thinking when he signed up for this one.
The hovering guns in the Mover fight scenes ultimately got a little tiresome as did the ear shrieking Bleeders. However my guess is that the Sci-Fi movie will find an audience with teenagers and do reasonably well in the Asian market as the movie is set in the bright lights and hustle bustle of Hong Kong.
