Cinema Voyage - Michael Pearson

This blog is PRIMARILY about movies. Some dvd and some that are still in the theater. Also, links are provided on some movies if you decide you want to purchase it. Also, I write and read quite a bit. So, you may, from time to time see a book review here from an up-and-coming author or an interview with one. If you have a book that you have written, please don't hesitate to contact me if you want an unbiased opinion. I would be happy to read and review what you've written. We should value our creative people more.

Review - Two Lovers

May 22nd 2009 02:46
Two Lovers was written and directed by James Gray and is the third pairing between that of the director and actor Joaquin Phoenix – previously having partnered for We Own The Night (2007) and The Yards (2000). Two Lovers takes its inspiration from a Dostoyevsky novella entitled White Nights and gave Gray the springboard he needed to write the screenplay specifically with Phoenix in mind.

We are first introduced to Leonard Kraditor (Joaquin Phoenix) at a particularly low point in his life – an attempt at suicide by drowning. After having had second thoughts about killing himself, he struggles to the surface slightly embarrassed about having been witnessed jumping into the water. Snippets of conversations from onlookers and his parents start to build upon the flawed individual – he works in a drycleaners and this is not his first attempt at suicide.

Leonard was engaged to be married but after a positive test by both he and his fiancé for the gene that carries Tay-Sachs syndrome, her parents called off the wedding. Disappointed and struggling to come to terms with the end of the relationship, Leonard seeks treatment and moves back in with his parents (Moni Moshonov and Isabella Rossellini), assisting his father with deliveries in the family dry-cleaning business.

His parents are very protective of Leonard both for his mental health and loneliness and arrange a dinner in order that he can be introduced to Sandra Cohen (Vinessa Shaw), the daughter of close family friends. He is initially unsure about the union seemingly blinded by the fact that she is connected to her family and his background. Sandra’s father also works in the dry-cleaning business and is planning to purchase the Kraditor business. Both families think the pairing will be beneficial to all involved, respecting their children’s wishes first and foremost.

What is interesting about the relationship between Sandra and Leonard is the fact that they are actually well suited to one another. She is smart, beautiful and gets him despite his inability to relate to others.

Enter Michelle Rausch (Gwyneth Paltrow). She is a neighbour to Leonard’s parents and he is instantly taken with her. She is blonde, beautiful and in no way connected to his past. When in her presence, he shines but she does not come without her flaws. Her apartment is rented for her by her married lover Ronald (Elias Koteas) who is a lawyer in the firm at which she works. She also has a history of drug abuse and is emotionally, a very needy individual.

The name Two Lovers is a little misleading as for the most part, Michelle and Leonard have only a platonic relationship, much to his annoyance. It is not until her world collapses that Michelle is willing to offer Leonard anything more than a friendship which is controlled by her neediness rather than affection.

The acting is superb particularly by Phoenix who captures both the simplicity and the complex nuances of Leonard’s awkwardness and uncertainty. Both Paltrow and Shaw are well balanced in their portrayal and the film manages to avoid the usual clichés found with many Jewish related storylines.

A compelling piece and if this really is the final acting role for Phoenix as he so claims, then what a way to go!
