Cinema Voyage - Michael Pearson

This blog is PRIMARILY about movies. Some dvd and some that are still in the theater. Also, links are provided on some movies if you decide you want to purchase it. Also, I write and read quite a bit. So, you may, from time to time see a book review here from an up-and-coming author or an interview with one. If you have a book that you have written, please don't hesitate to contact me if you want an unbiased opinion. I would be happy to read and review what you've written. We should value our creative people more.

Underwhelming Aussie TV!

April 2nd 2008 06:27

Im expecting a blasting for this post, but oh well.

Flicking through the TV guide this week one notices a few things 1) There is an awful lot of reality crap dominating the TV and 2) there is nothing decent on anymore, or if there is they keep pushing the air-times later and later to virtually kill off the show, which we have seen in the past. Shows like ‘Veronica Mars’ and ‘Gilmore Girls’ were butchered by network stations nine and ten. With both stations constantly putting the shows on and taking them off, then repeating the cycle, so much so it actually turned me off the channels for a period. I ended up purchasing the DVDs on the net, and saw them years before they aired on TV here.

Aussie TV this week consisted of: 22 various episodes of reality television, 5 Australian drama/soaps including; Underbelly, All Saints, Sea Patrol, Home and Away and Neighbours. As well as over 21 overseas programs, primarily American shows.

I have to admit that I spend minimal amounts of time watching Aussie shows, particularly Aussie dramas. Neighbours and Home and Away are the poor mans ‘Young and the Restless’. The reality shows everywhere in the world, not just in Australia are becoming beyond a joke, how many versions of the same show can be done before they become increasingly redundant. The scary news is the worst has yet to come; we still have Big Brother 08 coming!
One show that I don’t mind watching is ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ even though I don’t find it as interesting or exciting as the US counterpart, due in large part to that annoying Natalie Bassingthwaite who has as much personality as the power pole down the road.

I am starting to think im the only person in Australia (Barring Melb, because they can’t watch it) that cant stand the new Aussie show Underbelly.
If I wanted to spend 1 hour looking at breasts and butt grabbing I would watch a porno. Maybe my deep loathing of this show comes from the fact the moment this show starts my parents are drawn to the TV like bees to honey, and im forced to commandeer a television set elsewhere. I would much rather watch ‘Spicks and Specks’ which I find 1o times more exciting.

I’ve completely lost faith in major TV networks last night was a prime example of the beginnings of killing an American drama; Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles originally aired at 8:30 on Wednesday, then moved to 9:30 which was perfect, then disgustingly moved to 10:30 so ‘Ladette to Lady’ could air at 9:30, another generic reality show turning skanks into ladies.

And don’t even get me started on the whole Heroes thing; channel 7 for some reason or another decided not to air the last 2 episodes of Heroes.

Am I exaggerating? Are you happy with the TV your watching?

I gave up on Aussie TV years ago, there still hasn't been a show that I have enjoyed....haven't seen Underbelly yet, maybe that will change it. Im thinking of checking it out when it comes to DVD because I don't watch the commercial stations EVER.

As for the way they treat quality shows its despicable...how is it that Arrested Development, Sopranos and Battlestar Galactica end up screening after midnight while Home and Away and Neighbours are on in prime time....is Pushing Daisies even screening here?

Thank god for cable at least they show Deadwood, Dexter etc

lets just say I totally agree with most of your gripe...
