Cinema Voyage - Michael Pearson

This blog is PRIMARILY about movies. Some dvd and some that are still in the theater. Also, links are provided on some movies if you decide you want to purchase it. Also, I write and read quite a bit. So, you may, from time to time see a book review here from an up-and-coming author or an interview with one. If you have a book that you have written, please don't hesitate to contact me if you want an unbiased opinion. I would be happy to read and review what you've written. We should value our creative people more.

Worst on screen couples!

March 19th 2008 04:55

I felt it had to be done, the following couples induced hours of cringe worthy, laughable moments.

* Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen in – Episode II Attack of the Clones
Episode III Revenge of the Sith

Quite easily the worst on-screen couple ever. I mean who wasn’t enjoying the wooden performances and the complete lack of any chemistry. Natalie Portman had more chemistry with Jake Lloyd in Episode I: The Phantom Menace and I believe he was only 12. Hayden Christensen on the other hand has as much charisma as a blackened doorknob and has more chemistry with his light sabre than his leading lady; then again it must be hard to be outshined/acted by an inanimate object.

* Keira Knightley and Orlando bloom in – Pirates of The Caribbean 1, 2, 3

In the first film the relationship between Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner was somewhat believable, but in the end I didn’t really care because they annoyed me to tears. I do like both actors to a certain extent, just not in the Pirates franchise. Knightley had more chemistry with Johnny Depp, in their final scene in ‘Dead Man’s Chest’. Basically it further proves my point that even if you put two gorgeous actors together you may not have a hit movie.

*Tom hanks and Audrey Tautou in – The Da Vinci Code

For one of the most successful books of all time, the film the Da Vinci Code was a ratings flop. Thanks in large part to Tom Hanks, his hair and his leading lady Audrey Tautou. In some cases big age gaps between the actors can have a large part in the lack of chemistry, but I don’t even think age was a large factor in this particular case, it was terrible casting.

*Freddie Prinze Jr and Jennifer Love Hewitt in – I Know What You Did Last Summer

Now I love me some Freddie Prinze, but let’s face it, he’s not winning a Golden Globe anytime soon. Their relationship in this teen slasher was bland, boring and sleep inducing. When ever I watch ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ I always stop the movie after Sarah Michelle Gellar dies, as far as im concerned they killed the wrong bunch of actors.

Who are your favourite worst couples??

I agree with you about Natalie and Hayden, but then everything about that movie was bad. One scene, I remember, had people in the cinema laughing, it was so ridiculous. It was like a Jurassic Sound of Music as the two were messing around in a field, that stupid, corny, horrible scene. Didn't work for me at all.

Does anyone get thrown off by interracial couples on the big screen? It’s funny; in real life I have no problem with different ethnicities getting together and have tried it myself on occasion, but on the big screen it doesn’t usually work for me.

I have a couple i can think of :
Ben Affleck and Gwenyth Paltrow ( forget name of movie)
They were broken up, but decided to go through with the movie. It had zero chemistry , it was so bad I was praying for this movie to be over...
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez
Gigli. Enough said. Media Exposure is never a good idea.
Harry Potter and Cho Chang
Cmon' , their chemistry was so bad. I really didn't even care about the kiss. Hermione and Harry potter on the other hand...
I can't think of anymore right now. But the reason why they don't work ? Who knows maybe you just can't fake how genuinely interested you are in the other person. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks famously got on really well during filming. Sandra Bullock and Matthew Mchounahey dated. But still, some off screen couple don't really transfer well on screen. Maybe they feel self conscious about their relationship? Don't know.

I agree with Louie. Kidman and Cruise in Eyes Wide Shut was painful to watch. The fact they were married made it doubly so...

Hi Bianca,

A few that stand out for me:

Totally agree with those who have cited the married couples Tom & Nicole and Affeck and Jello.

Christian Bale and Katie Holmes had so little chemistry I almost forgot they were meant to be a couple onscreen in Batman Begins.

Harrison Ford and Anne Heche in 6 Days and 7 Nights.

I know many will disagree but Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in anything have a sterility between them that always reminds they are 2 artificial individuals instead of a pair in love.

Come on, those two wern't that bad.
I was kinda convinced at different stages through all 3 movies.

Note: Agree on the Woody Allen thing, except didnt he marry his 20 year old adopted daughter or something.
Freakin weirdo

Aww Com' on, Woody wasn;t that bad with Sharon Stone. I thought he had great sex appeal as Zee in the Ant Movie?

I Have ot agree with the Da Vinci Code, and for me, the biggest dissapointment for me - and perhaps the worst - has to be Leonardo DC and Kate W in Titanic... yep, very tragic indeed.

I actually thought Natalie and Hayden did a bang up job... *chuckle*
