Wristcutters: A Love Story - Movie Review
March 30th 2008 04:58
Directed by Goran Dukic and based on the short story ‘Knellers Happy Campers’ by Etgar Keret. Starring Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous), Shannyn Sossamon (A Knights Tale), Tom Waits, Leslie Bibb (Popular), Will Arnett (Arrested Development), Azura Skye and Sarah Roemer.
Set in a bizarre afterlife full of people that have committed suicide. After the main protagonist Zia commits suicide by slitting his wrists. He finds himself in an afterlife midpoint, equally as bleak as his former life. He meets Eugene a former Russian rocker and his entire family, all suicide victims. He later learns that his ex-girlfriend committed suicide after his death. Zia and Eugene then embark on a road trip to find his ex Desiree.
Cited as a black comedy/drama/fantasy I didn’t quite get the comedy. The actors were all great; except for Shannyn Sossamon I don’t find her engaging or remotely talented at all, which may seem a bit harsh.
Now I am a big fan of indie flicks, I like quirky movies, but I really did not enjoy ‘Wristcutters’, I was constantly pausing it, looking for snacks, basically I was bored to tears. There were a few moments that were touching, that made you think, but in the end I didn’t really care, I was just waiting for it to finish.
Original and creative, but not my cup of tea.
